Dutch translational research thrives at Optical Surgical Navigation Symposium and SPIE Photonics West 2025

The 2025 Stanford Symposium on Optical Surgical Navigation and SPIE Photonics West provided a platform for groundbreaking developments in optical surgical navigation and fluorescence-guided surgery. The presence of leading Dutch researchers and institutions at both events underscored the Netherlands’ influential role in this rapidly evolving field.

A Strong Dutch Presence in Translational Research

The translational focus of the symposium and congress was evident, with notable Dutch contributions in multiple sessions. Highlighted cutting-edge advancements, with contributions from Alex Vahrmeijer, Merlijn Hutteman, and Max Witjes. Their work, alongside frequent references to Dutch research, underscored Netherlands’ position as a leading innovator in image-guided surgery, with a prominent role of the Groningen-based OMIG and Green Light Leiden.

Here we outlined the inspiring talks:

  • Clinical translation of NIR fluorescent agents & Clinical translation of near infrared optical imaging agents for critical structure delineation and tumour detection up to Phase III pivotal trials by Alex Vahrmeijer
  • Fluorescence molecular imaging for intraoperative margin assessment in oral cancer patients using cetuximab-800CW & Clinical challenges and image guided surgery in cancer by Max Witjes.
  • Dual-labeled CEA-targeted imaging for gastrointestinal cancer: Tumor localization and treatment planning by Merlijn Hutteman

The Rise of Fluorescence-Guided Surgery

An exciting highlight was the increasing attention towards fluorescence projects, as presented by Jordi Hogervorst from Quest Olympus. His presentation demonstrated the growing interest in fluorescence imaging applications and their potential to enhance surgical precision.

With such a dynamic presence at these leading events, it is clear that Dutch research and innovation in optical surgical navigation and fluorescence-guided surgery remain at the forefront of global advancements.
