During the Fluorescence Guided Surgery (FGS) session at the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) 43, excellent speakers showed how FGS improves patient outcomes in different procedures.
Annemiek Doeksen showed that ICG-fluorescence is non-inferior to Tc99 in Sentinel Lymph Node Mapping (SLN) in breast cancer surgery. Followed by all the advantages of ICG for patients, surgeons and also the environment. Ended with a demonstration of the procedure and implementation advice.
Denise Hilling presented the AVOID trial on reducing anastomotic leakage through Fluorescence-Guided techniques. This excellent research made clear how fluorescence supports decision-making of the surgeon during (left-sided) colorectal resection.
The research presented by Annemiek Doeksen and Denise Hilling moves us one step further towards integrating Fluorescence Guided Surgery into guidelines for the procedures of SLN in breast cancer and left-sided colorectal anastomisis.
Stefan Koning closed the session with promising research on Fluorescence-Guided breast reconstruction. Potentially leading to even more FGS based procedures into future guidelines.
