Verdye (Indocyanine Green, ICG) has previously been approved for the breast SLN indication in Spain. Now this is extended to Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK.
This marks a major step forward for the clinical use of fluorescence-guided surgery.
Where SLNB used to rely on radioactive tracers and blue dye, there is now a validated, patient-friendly alternative that fits into daily surgical practice.
Using 99mTc is a significant burden for both patients as well as hospitals which includes logistical challenges associated with pre-procedure administration and the risk of exposure to ionizing radiation. Additionally, blue dyes can pose significant potential risks including soft tissue necrosis, metabolic and hematologic side effects, making it infrequently utilised for routine surgical care.
With ICG fluorescence, SLNB becomes not just precise but also safer, more streamlined and more sustainable:
